MCM Brings the Sounds of German Disco and Techno to Life for SS20

The legacy of MCM and its connection to Germany’s history in music serves as the inspiration point for the label’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection. The sound of disco has deep ties to Munich, the birthplace of MCM, while Berlin’s techno scene — a modern, forward-thinking culture in its own right — embodies the contemporary identity of the brand. For his inaugural drop, Global Creative Officer Dirk Schönberger balances both references, coming through in the aesthetic details and fabrication of the collection’s tailored looks with a sportswear lean.

The cultural touchstones evade a literal interpretation and instead are considered through a thoughtful and artful execution. Modern utilitarian and militaria garments carry the ornate essence that permeates through disco, only to be contrasted by techno’s irreverent edge. The result is an assemblage of silhouettes full of movement and volume, constructed with bold textures and colors alongside neutrals that reference the uniform nature of the Berlin club scene.

MCM’s signature deconstructed and traditional techniques remain throughout. For instance, the label’s iconic logo is used alongside a diamond-shaped graphic that alludes to disco balls in all-over prints on tracksuits, blouson jackets, shorts, carry-alls and scarves. Flared denim bottoms complement silk tops and statement shirts. MCM’s classic bags, like the tambourine and messenger, are reenvisioned with sporty themes, balanced by elegant and style heavy backpacks and box bags. Completing the offering, genderless footwear makes an appearance, as with the Chelsea boots — featuring sportier characteristics in the same vein as the sneakers.
